Abbey House Youth Hostel accommodation, Whitby

Abbey House Youth Hostel accommodation, Whitby
Youth Hostel Association
£3m

Complete refurbishment / conversion of a Grade I listed hotel to a new 100 bed youth hostel. Works included asbestos removal, strip-out, stonework restoration, structural strengthening of floors and roof, lead/tile roof coverings and new lift shaft. Internal reconfiguration to form new rooms and dormitories, full building services upgrade, internal finishes, commercial catering facilities, furniture and fit-out, ornamental landscaping and structural improvements to boundary walls. Works undertaken within boundaries of World Heritage site with strict access constraints due to public access and planning.
The sensitivity of the project was not only the building’s listing but its location on the Whitby Headland whereby we proposed enabling works in order to access the site remotely from significant visitor numbers to the World Heritage site. The conservation and restoration element of the Works though not extensive, required consistent processes of investigation and discovery prior to the new building internal structures being installed. Significant structural elements were installed following careful planning especially concerning access; where at times heavy plant made way for simple techniques of splitting elements and pulley / bracing systems.
