Work has already begun on the restoration of the park’s historic archway, which was removed in December 2018 and is due to return later this summer.
The second phase of the restoration of the park will be delivered by William Birch and Sons Ltd.
Gill Osgerby, capital development manager at Hull City Council, said: “The Pearson Park restoration project is fantastic for both the park and the area.
“The park has a long history with Hull, after being gifted to the city by Zachariah Pearson in the 19th Century, and is one of the city’s most recognisable and best-loved green spaces.
“The archway is halfway through its restoration process and we are now working with William Birch to deliver the rest of the project, so it’s a really exciting time for the park.”
The project has been supported by a £3m grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The works have commenced and are scheduled to take approximately 12 months to complete. During the works, the park will remain as accessible as possible, with disruption kept to a minimum.
The works include:
- A full replacement of the conservatory to match the original with a new colourful planting scheme and public toilets
- The full restoration of the Grade II Listed East Lodge to provide a new office and meeting space and creation of a garden for community use
- Improvement works to the Bowling Pavilion
- Improvement works to the Ice Cream Kiosk
- Reinstatement of the lost bandstand, informed by the original designs from 1860
- Reinstatement of the lost bridge over the lake informed by the original designs from 1860
- New planting schemes – including tree planting
- Resurfacing of most paths and other hard surfaces
- New seats and bins
- Restoration of the Pearson Memorial
- Restoration of the Prince Albert and Queen Victoria statues
- New kerb, repair of the drainage and resurfacing of the Carriage Drive – the perimeter road around the park
Gemma Shahjahan, Director at William Birch & Sons Ltd said; “We are delighted to have been selected to complete the next stage in the journey of the restoration of the park. We have a strong portfolio of restoring heritage parks in the region such as West Park in Goole and the award winning Shibden Park in Halifax, this experience will bring great benefits to the overall project and we look forward to unveiling the new facilities next year”
