Birch Scoops Certificate of Excellence

William Birch & Sons has been awarded a certificate of excellence by the Concrete Society for its refurbishment work on the only church in Britain built entirely from reinforced concrete.

Constructed in 1916, the Parish Church of St John and St Mary Magdalene, at Goldthorpe, Rotherham, was pioneering for its time, as the judges commented:
“The building has a unique role in architectural history as an example of how designers at the turn of the 20th century were taking reinforced concrete, a relatively unknown material, out of the hands of expensive specialists and adapting the technology for everyday use.”

This prestigious award, won for the Mature Structures Category, reflects the excellence shown by the William Birch team, who undertook concrete repairs, re-roofing and associated internal finishes to the listed building.

Paul Goyea, William Birch’s construction director, said: “This is a great achievement for our team whom as dedicated professionals have strived to make sure that the client enjoyed a high level of service and a first class product which has now been recognised by the Concrete Society.”

William Birch has enjoyed award-winning success since it was founded in 1874 and has an excellent reputation for quality craftsmanship and value for money.
