Added boost to Guardian Angels’ continuing Appeal

The companies responsible for building a life-saving children’s unit at York District Hospital, funded out of a successful £300,000 Guardian Angels appeal run by The Press in association with York Hospitals NHS Trust, have raised a further £1500 towards new equipment for the unit.

The high-dependency unit was built by York’s William Birch & Sons, along with six sub-contractors, including J Wedgewood & Son, A1 Environmental Services, Dunnington Electrical Services, Penlon, Aardvark Flooring and Static Systems Group.

Together they have donated £1500 to the ongoing appeal, which was gratefully received by Robin Ball of Guardian Angels York, which is now a registered charity set up to ensure continued funding for the new unit.

The charity is now looking at funding a specialised transportation unit, to help the most critical young patients travel to other specialised units if this becomes necessary.

More than 80 young people have been treated in the unit since it opened last August, and the £300,000 appeal has now swelled to £323,000.

“Having been involved with building this life-saving children’s ward since the beginning, we, and our sub contractors, felt it was a cause well worth contributing to and we were delighted to be able to add to the growing fund.  Seeing Robin Ball and his team in action, it is clear that excellent work is being done thanks to the new improved facilities.”

Chris Birch, managing director of William Birch & Sons

The high-dependency unit was a refurbished section of existing premises at York Hospital, upgraded to provide specialist care for young people from around the region, and it means patients no longer have to be automatically transferred to Leeds, easing the strain for their families at a traumatic time.

If you would like to donate money to the new Guardian Angels unit, send cheques made out to Guardian Angels York, Foss House, 271 Huntington Road, York, YO31 9BR.
