Our History

Since 1874 William Birch has been building a name for quality craftsmanship in the construction industry.

It has established a leading reputation not only in York, the ancient city where the firm was born, but also regionally. Today, as one of the oldest construction companies in the UK, taking immense pride in its heritage and family values, it is firmly focused on the future.

DECADES OF GROWTH

For over 150 years, William Birch has grown steadily, evolving from a small local business into a trusted name in construction across the North. Each decade has been marked by innovation, resilience, and a commitment to delivering high-quality projects while maintaining strong relationships with clients, partners, and communities.

Our growth has never been just about size, it’s about people, expertise, and reputation. By investing in our workforce, embracing new technologies, and responding to the changing needs of the industry, we have been able to expand our capabilities while staying true to the values that have guided us since our founding.

Consistent family ownership has underpinned the many years spent by the company in creating the fabric of York and the wider region, always taking the long-term view of investing for the future. This enduring approach ensures that William Birch continues to thrive, ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

LEGACY & FUTURE

From the very beginning, our founders placed integrity at the heart of the business, a principle that continues to guide every decision we make. Our legacy is built on trust, craftsmanship, and long-standing relationships with the communities we serve.
